PX5 RTOS
is the fastest!

Boosting device performance and cutting power usage

The PX5 RTOS is the fastest again – in every category – in the latest 2026 RTOS Performance Report issued by the Beningo Embedded Group. Based on the open-source ThreadMetric RTOS performance tests, the PX5 RTOS showed superior performance over eight widely used RTOSs: ThreadX, FreeRTOS, Zephyr, RTX5, uC/OS-III, NuttX, and RT-Thread. Here are some of the report highlights:

  • ThreadX is up to 30.2% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • FreeRTOS is up to 80.7% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • Zephyr is up to 45.3% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • RTX5 is up to 81.7% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • uC/OS-III is up to 65.1% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • NuttX is up to 88% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • RT-Thread is up to 86.3% slower than PX5 RTOS
PX5 RTOS is fastest in 2026

Using the IEEE POSIX pthread APIs, the numbers are even more pronounced, since PX5 RTOS is one of the few RTOSs with a native implementation of the IEEE POSIX pthread API, i.e., other RTOSs typically employ an additional POSIX translation layer. Here are the 2026 report highlights based on the IEEE POSIX pthread APIs:

  • ThreadX is up to 44.9% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • FreeRTOS is up to 92.2% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • Zephyr is up to 88% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • RTX5 (no POSIX pthread API layer available)
  • uC/OS-III (no POSIX pthread API layer available)
  • NuttX is up to 87.3% slower than PX5 RTOS
  • RT-Thread is up to 94.6% slower than PX5 RTOS

Why is Performance Important?

According to most embedded developer surveys, RTOS real-time performance is at or near the top of their priorities. Some of the reasons for this include:

  • Faster RTOS enables faster device response
  • Faster RTOS executes fewer instructions, reducing power consumption
  • Faster RTOS frees more cycles for the application to use
  • Faster RTOS can reduce BOM costs
  • Faster RTOS improves development

Real-time performance is all-important-by its very definition, if your device doesn’t meet its real-time requirements, it fails. In safety-critical applications, such a failure can be catastrophic. The superior performance of PX5 RTOS provides the best foundation to meet the most demanding real-time requirements.

PX5 RTOS requires fewer cycles, which implicitly helps meet the needs of applications with demanding power requirements, perhaps even making some of them feasible. In addition, the cycles not used by PX5 RTOS are now available for the application.

PX5 RTOS allows you to use a less expensive processor since it requires fewer cycles. How much of a savings depends on the use case, but simply increasing processing power from 84MHz to 168MHz can add another $1 to your BOM cost. Likely, the slower RTOS is bigger, too, which can further increase BOM cost.

Development with the PX5 RTOS is more manageable. It helps developers quickly solve their real-time, power, and application processing needs, saving time and schedule. As of 2023, an average 8-person development team costs roughly $6K daily. Using the PX5 RTOS, many development days can be eliminated, significantly reducing the total development cost, especially for larger development teams.
